Using a 16V battery (racing / audio)

TheV 12/16 Volt Battery User Instructions Contact Information: tech@theVbattery.com warranty@thevBattery.com Using "theV" 16Volt products WARNING! LEAD ACID BATTERIES PRODUCE EXPLOSIVE GASSES. CIGARETTES, FLAMES, OR SPARKS COULD CAUSE A BATTERY TO EXPLODE. NEVER SMOKE WHEN WORKING AROUND A BATTERY OR A BATTERY VENTING SYSTEM! NEVER WELD OR PRODUCE A SPARK AROUND A BATTERY OR A BATTERY VENTING SYSTEM. ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EYEWEAR WHEN SERVICING A BATTERY. SULFURIC ACID CAN CAUSE SEVERE BURNS. IMMEDIATELY Flush eyes WITH WATER for 15 minutes. KEEP ALL BATTERIES AND BATTERY ACID OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. Always remove negative (-) battery cable first and replace it last. Never disconnect battery terminals with engine running. Voltage spike may occur and damage electrical equipment and lead to personal injury. The 16-Volt Concept More voltage = Better performance The 16-volt concept was introduced to the racing industry over a decade ago and has become the recognized leader in higher voltage battery technology in many racing sanctions worldwide. 16 volts increases the performance of most racing ignitions by producing a hotter spark from the spark plug as a result of the higher voltage. This "Hotter Spark" concept in racing applications can be directly related to increased voltage. At 16.8 volts maximum output, the 16-volt system, without an alternator, produces in excess of 2 additional volts over a conventional 12-volt system with an alternator. Coupled with a 16-volt alternator, the 16V system approaches 20 volts output. Testing reveals that a 16 volt battery discharged @ 200 amps for 2 seconds will sustain in excess of 14.4 volts through the test without an alternator. A comparable 12 volt battery falls off to 11.1 volts @ 200 amps for 2 seconds without an alternator. In an attempt to hold the voltage as close to 18 volts as possible, many performance competitors are running high output alternators putting out around 18 volts. 18 volts into a 12-volt battery literally "cooks" the plates, as the maximum charge voltage into a 12-volt battery should never exceed 15.5 or 2.6 volts per cell. Subjecting a 12-volt battery to these kinds of high voltages drastically shortens the life of the battery as the active material on the plates starts to soften and shed due to the high voltage. The 16-volt battery, on the other hand, has a maximum charge voltage of 20.8 volts, which is well within the charging range of these high voltage competition alternators. A 12-volt battery can produce a maximum of 12.6 volts (2.1 volts per cell x 6) under load; the cell CANNOT produce in excess of 2.1 volts per cell under load. Using an alternator helps, but charging voltage in excess of 2.6 volts per cell, or 15.5 volts total on a 12 volt battery has damaging effects. You can increase the reserve capacity, or staying power, of a battery by increasing the number of plates per cell or using thicker plates but that has no effect on increasing the voltage... The only way to increase lead acid voltage is by adding individual cells in a series configuration More cells placed in series in a battery equates to more voltage... designing those cells so that they have the staying power to withstand the peak voltage demands over a specified period of time is another issue. If the battery doesn't have the muscle to keep that higher voltage up over a given period of time (a quarter mile drag race or a DB drag race), then the benefits of a higher voltage battery are quickly eliminated. That's why all "theV" 16 volt batteries for both audio and racing applications with a "Deep Cycle" construction. Our AGM sealed maintenance free 16-volt battery uses Absorbent Glass Mat separators, which are vibration resistant and hold the acid like a sponge making the battery leak proof and spill proof. With the AGM Series 16 volt Performance battery there is NO MAINTENANCE and NO MESS! Our AGM series 25-amp charger has all the features and is designed for charging the AGM Series and lead acid batteries. Shipping: Our AGM Series maintenance free "theV" 16 Volt car performance audio / racing battery can be shipped via UPS, FedEx, common carrier, etc. The AGM Series maintenance free battery is shipped fully charged and ready to go. The Effect of 16 Volts on 12 Volt Accessories Most 12-volt accessories will operate fine on 16 volts when placed in a 16-volt system that does not use an alternator, however, we recommend that you contact the manufacturer of any 12-volt accessories that you wish to run on 16 volts for their opinion. Reasoning behind this is that a 12-volt accessory is actually designed to be subjected too as high as 15+ volts when used with a 12-volt alternator. Running 12-volt accessories on a 16-volt system that uses an alternator, however, subjects that accessory to 18 plus volts and should definitely be discussed with the 12-volt accessory manufacturer. Charging a 12volt battery with the 16V charger will damage the battery, charger, and could cause personal injury. Disclaimer The "theV" 16 VOLT BATTERY is designed for specialty AUDIO & RACING APPLICATIONS and is not recommended for standard passenger car use. Technical Assistance Our technicians are available during the business day to answer questions you may have by contacting tech@batteriesareus.com 16 Volt Precautions To eliminate the chance of electrical component failure when using 16 volts, the following procedures should be followed: 1. ALWAYS THROW THE PRIMARY POWER KILL SWITCH (IF AVAILABLE) WHEN CHARGING THE BATTERY. A 16-volt battery requires in excess of 19 volts to charge and, if subjected to this excess voltage, certain electrical components could be damaged. 2. WIRING THROUGHOUT THE CAR SHOULD NOT BE LIGHTER THAN 16 GAUGE. Any wiring in the car lighter than 16 gauges should be replaced when running 16 volts. 3. CHECK WITH ELECTRICAL COMPONENT MANUFACTURERS AS TO 16-VOLT COMPATIBILITY. 4. MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT "THEV" 16-VOLT CHARGER: The AGM Series valve regulated "theV" battery must only be charged with "theV" designed Charger. PERIOD Warranty is NOT available unless theV charger model and serial # is available.
