Is a Carwash a Good Business?

If I invest in a carwash what is my typical revenue that I should expect? Is there a typical average monthly revenue figure, which is standard for carwashes in the United States? How much money will a carwash make?

Well, this of course depends on the type of carwash for instance a Self Serve Coin-op, Rollover, Touch-less Automatic, Full Serve Carwash, Hand Carwash or Mobile Car Wash. If you are talking about a fixed site location, it also depends on what is in your 10-mile radius, competition, traffic counts, number of single-family dwellings, town homes or apartments. And indeed demographics play a significant role as well.

When answering such a question you also need to be talking about regional variation before it is safe to throw out numbers, different mind sets, price points, etc. Weather is also a huge issue and the seasonality of carwashes makes averaging tough, as it could be an El Nino year, harsh winter or bright and sunny? It would not be right to begin throwing out such numbers, however one can always go read the industry surveys int he trade journals. Realize the average privately owned car wash proprietors are probably skimming $2300 per week on top of sales. IRS knows it and they get one of the highest audit counts. So even the surveys maybe a little off. Think on these issues before opening a carwash of your own.
