Tips to Enhance Memory
With a little work and the right guidance, you can enhance
memory at almost any age. Many older adults resign themselves to
being a little forgetful, however, in the absence of an actual
disease state such as Alzheimer's, this is seldom necessary. It
is true that you may need to be a little more meticulous in your
habits - writing things down as necessary, for example. However,
do not assume that growing older is necessarily a challenge to
your memory.
Forgetfulness isn't only for the aging, though. How many of us
wish that we could enhance memory, regardless of age? For
example, having an excellent memory is a great boon to any
career, particularly one in which you work with the public. If
you can remember the names of clients that you have met only
once or twice, studies show that sale increase and overall
communication is improved. Everyone likes to feel recognized and
appreciated. There are a number of techniques you can use to
improve memory of clients' names, including breaking up the name
into syllables and associating each syllable with a visual
image. For example, using this technique, a client by the name
of 'Mrs. Hendrickson' could be associated (only in your mind, of
course) with an image of a hen drinking water. Once the visual
link is established, it is very easy to remember this
association.
Here's another tip to enhance memory - apparently, the more
muscles you use to learn something, the more likely you are to
remember it. If you only use your eyes - if you are reading
something over, for example - you are relativley unlikely to
have really learned it. If you read out loud, you are slightly
more likely to remember, because you used more muscles. If you
are studying for a test and you need to remember a body of
informatio, the best advice is this - write out what you are
studying. When you write, many muscles are involved, and the
information is much more likely to really be remembered.
It is always worth your while to enhance memory, whether you are
a student, a professional, or an older adult. These and other
techniques should help you effectively enhance memory in fairly
short order. The payoff, other than enhanced memory, is that
people generally stay younger for longer if they are mentally
active and have a strong interest in life.
