unless you're a casino high roller.
Five shows are on our Top Vegas Shows list, but there was
one clear winner -- Celine Dion. The Quebec-born singer's
Las Vegas production, "A New Day," continues to hit the
jackpot. In 2005, her critically-heralded Las Vegas spectacular
racked up about $81 million in gross ticket sales, behind only
the Rolling Stones and U2.
The two-year-old show was created by Franco Dragone, the man
behind some of the most successful Cirque du Soleil shows, and
has been sold out since its launch.
Cirque du Soleil (French for Circus of the Sun) was
started by a couple of street performers in Quebec, and has
since become an entertainment juggernaut. If you have seen a
Cirque show, you already know it defies description. The group
continually pushes the envelope on innovative entertainment and
has created some of the best shows anywhere in the world.
Cirque, which ranks fourth on this week's list, is now
expanding beyond show routines, with an up-and-coming record
label, retail stores and even a deal with a cruise line. Can't
get to Sin City? Then it's likely one of the company's six
touring shows will hit your town, whether it is Athens,
Minneapolis, or Sydney.
Still, the troupe's home away from home is undoubtedly Vegas.
Which brings us to the third show on our list, the newest Cirque
production, "Ka." The $165 million martial arts themed
production is currently running at the Las Vegas MGM Grand.
Ka brings together astonishing acrobatic performances,
the thrills and action of martial arts from all over the world,
plus astonishing innovations in puppetry.
