Tirol in Boehmerwald
According to Bruno Sitter, sometime in the 1300s,an entire
village of Tyrolean Germans were relocated to the wilds of the
Boehmian Forest. They called the new town they established
there, Wallern. In English, Wallern means "Whale learning", this
is very curious as the Tyrol is hundreds of miles from any
ocean, and in fact lies in the European Alps. However it could
be a reference to the art of artificial insemination of cattle,
perhaps referring to the Biblical story of Jonah who spent time
inside a Whale's belly, but in this case it was the insertion of
a human arm inside of a cow, for the purpose of impregnating the
beast. In any case the village of Wallern was built in a most
curious fashion, the people coming from the Tyrol built there
homes in the style they were accustomed to,but which seemed
entirely out of place in their new home the Bohemian forest. For
hundreds of years after the 1300s, travelers took note of the
strange architectural style of the town, which seemed so out of
place, when compared to other villages in this region.
