Sober Nutrition

Well it's no secret that we weren't healthy. Our minds weren't healthy and our bodies definitely suffered from many forms of abuse - including nutritional deficiencies. Alcoholism can primarily have two bad effects on one's nutrition: Alcoholics frequently do not eat a balanced diet, liquid meals do not count and no- there are not enough vitamins in a Guinness to keep you healthy and strong. An alcoholic can ingest most of their total daily calories from alcohol. Alcohol also interferes with the body's ability to use the nutrients it does receive by affecting how well it can use them by means such as liver disease or impaired liver functioning. So even if sufficient nutrients are consumed in an alcoholic's daily diet, alcohol can so effectively disrupt body functions as to cause nutrient-related deficiencies. These factors affect both energy supply, or metabolism, and the maintenance of the body's physical structures. Once an alcoholic becomes sober they may notice immediate differences in the way their bodies feel and may lose weight rather quickly and assume they are being healthy. The truth is we still do not know how to eat nutritionally and because of the affects of mal-nutrition on the mind as well as the body it may be difficult to maintain sobriety on weakened senses. In learning to live a sober life, it is important that we begin to eat nutritionally balanced meals on a regular basis. But where do we start? It seems like there is more advice, more vitamin options and everywhere you turn around someone is giving different advice toward national health. The first key is moderation (wait! what's that?!). Taking too many vitamins can be detrimental to your health and not balancing your diet can cause undesirable effects. Even if healthy smoothies taste great they shouldn't be consumed for every meal and every snack. The best course of action would be to talk to a nutritionist and follow a montinored eating plan. There are many options out there so please talk to your doctor before you drastically change your eating habits.
