Who's Homework Is It?
When it comes to our children, at times it can be difficult for
us as parents to step aside and let them make mistakes. In
particular, it can be hard to watch over our child's shoulder as
they make mistakes on their homework. Whether we mean to or not,
our overbearing and corrective tendencies can be more
counterproductive then we ever intended.
If you can help yourself, give your child a choice as to whether
they want your help with their homework or not. And if it's not
too much, give them the option of turning in their homework
without your corrections. With a little time, you may find out
that your child stops resisting your well intended interest in
their homework, and starts coming to you for help with their
homework. If your child is given the option, they may start to
ask for your advice and ask you to double check their work.
As parents we want to nurture our children and give them the
best of the best. But sometimes we need to learn how to step
aside and let them figure things out for themselves. Homework is
no exception. Teachers don't expect perfection; homework is
assigned as a learning experience. So if our children make
occasional mistakes it's not the end of the world. Remember,
it's their homework, not yours.
