Trans fat the Deadliest of them all
Trans fatty acids commonly abridged to trans fat is the absolute
worst fat any individual can consume. It is more evil than
saturated fats. Trans fat spells double trouble for your heart
because it lowers the high density lipoprotein (good
cholesterol) and increases the amounts of low -density
lipoprotein (bad cholesterol). Trans fat start out as normal
vegetable oil such as sunflower oil. It is than bombarded with
hydrogen atoms in the presence of a metal catalyst such as
nickel. The final product is a harder and more stable form of
vegetable oil, like margarine. The harder the margarine is, the
more trans fat it will contain. Before 2006 food manufacturers
weren't required to list the amounts of trans fat on food items.
Luckily it has been made mandatory by the FDA. The reason why
food manufacturers love trans fat is because it can promote the
stability and shelf life of a food item which would make the
manufacturer costs cheaper. If you think about it for a minute,
have you ever wondered how those Twinkies or those candy bars in
the gas station stay there forever without spoiling? It's
because it is not natural. Natural foods spoil over time,
artificial and genetically altered foods can stay longer, which
means it will stay longer in your body. So, when in doubt always
go with butter. Butter has been around since civilization
started; margarine just came into the human food supply in the
last couple of decades. Foods that contain trans fat include but
is not limited to:
Doughnuts Cakes Cookies
Breads Pastries Candy bars Muffins
Crackers
