Record Hurricane Season

Hurricane Wilma brings us to tie with the busiest Tropical Storm Season on record. The last time there were 12 Named Tropical Storms was in 1933. In 1995 and 1887 there were 20 named storms and we have now passed both of those records. Once we get to Tropical Storm of Hurricane Alpha, we will have accomplished what no one had suspected. The most named storms of any season since they started keeping records, which was in 1851. Before 1851 the Hurricane and Tropical Storm records were not so reliable. The reason that we are on Named Storm 21 instead of 26 for the English Language Alphabet is because we do not name storms for Z, Y, X, U, Q because there just are not enough possible names and they might be re-used too often and confuse folks.

There are many who love the weather and are watching closely this Hurricane Season and in fact after Hurricane Katrina and Rita it appears that the number of hits at the National Weather Center have also broken all records.
