Avoid Food Therapy

Depression sometimes leads to weight loss. More often than not, it leads to weight gain. Sitting around and snacking can be very comforting; it is called food therapy. Eating junk food to make you feel better. Ordering in pizza because it makes you feel better. Snacking on chips all day and candy all night. Chocolate is an especially bad, because of the way it interacts with your brain. So how do you kick this habit?

There are a couple of good ways. The first one is to remove all junk food from your house. If you live alone, this is easy to do. If you live with others, it is more difficult. What you can do instead, is move all junk food to one cabinet, one that you studiously avoid. However, knowing that the food is available to you makes it harder to resist. That is simply human nature.

The second thing to do is begin a hobby that involves your hands. By finding a hobby that you can do with your hands, such as knitting or drawing or even video games, you will be keeping yourself occupied, and keeping your hands occupied as well. As long as they are busy, it is harder for you to snack. Since most people snack while sitting around doing nothing, depressed people are more at risk of over-eating.

Another option is to start snacking on vegetables. Baby carrots are perfect for this. Instead of snacking on potato chips or cookies, pull out celery sticks. That way, if you are going to snack, you will do so in a healthy manner and you will find that it will help your depression.

Finally, speak with your therapist. Since this is not an uncommon problem, you might find that he or she can suggest other things for you to do, or other ways for you to eliminate this urge.
