Chairs - Choosing A Rocker

In this article we're going to go over tips on what to look for when deciding to buy a rocking chair.

Rocking chairs are probably one of the most popular chairs, especially in America where many people get a great joy out of rocking their child to sleep. Here are some tips when looking for a rocking chair.

The first thing you have to figure out is where you are going to put your rocking chair. Because these chairs are larger than most normal chairs and also because they need room to move you have to first make sure that you have sufficient space to not only place the chair but be able to actually use it. You don't want the legs of your rocker slamming into a wall behind you or bumping into a table in front of you.

It is important that your rocking chair is comfortable. Many rocking chairs are used for therapeutic purposes. John F. Kennedy's rocking chair was a perfect example of this and one where many replicas were made. As a matter of fact, replicas of Kennedy's rocker were the most popular during the 1960s. People spend many hours in rockers so you want to make sure that yours has seating support. A padded cushion is usually best. You also want to make sure the chair has comfortable elbow support. Plus, you want the seat and the back to be both firm and flexible.

The next thing you want to make sure of is that the chair is pitched correctly. In other words, does the chair provide a smooth rocking motion without tipping? If it feels like you are about to fall backwards when rocking then the chair is not pitched correctly. Does a single push keep the chair rocking for an extended length of time, as it should, or does it stop after only a few seconds? These are things to look for as far as pitch.

You also want to make sure that the rocking chair was constructed using materials and methods that have been proven to produce chairs that are long lasting. The last thing you want is a chair that is going to fall apart on you quickly.

Obviously, you want to choose a rocking chair that is going to fit the decor of your house. Do you want a chair that is upholstered or do you want one that shows off the natural wood of the chair? Do you want a traditional back or one that has vertical slats or woven cane?

Of course you want to pick a maximum amount you're going to spend on your chair. Rockers, because they have to be specially made, can be very expensive. You can spend up to $20,000 for a Sam Maloof with a two-year waiting list. Or you can pick up something cheap off of E-bay for $20. Obviously there is a lot in between.

Finally, do you want your chair shipped to you already put together or are you handy enough that you can assemble it yourself?

By keeping the above items in the front of your mind you will be making sure that your rocker is exactly what you're looking for.
