The "Un-Classical" Vocalist

About a century ago, music started changing. We got Jazz and Blues and singers like Billie Holiday. Then came Rock & Roll...Soul, R&B, Punk, Metal, Emo, Screamo, and so on. The music has changed. But in many schools vocal technique is the same....and currently out-dated. Rock singers are taking classical voice lessons and becoming limited. Many classical voice teachers will tell you that you are singing incorrectly, you will hurt yourself, you will loose your voice and all your top notes.

Singers like Aretha Franklin prove to me that these teachers are wrong. I recently saw Aretha in concert, her top notes are there and seem as effortless as ever. This effortlessness comes from the placement of the note. Placement refers to where the sound vibrates. If you are allowing the sound to vibrate right on your vocal chords you may hurt yourself. But what if you push the sound up high enough so that it vibrates at the top of your skull? The skull can take those vibrations and amplify them. You are now singing louder than ever without putting any stress on the vocal chords. This technique is called Full Voice with Resonation. It has been achieved by hundreds of singers.

Ric Poulin developed a teaching method which has never failed to get any female student up to the High F in Full Voice with Resonation. As a voice teacher I am giving lessons all day long, I am singing in Full Voice with Resonation for almost 8 hours straight, and I never feel a thing! This is just one small aspect of vocal training in a "Rock/Pop/R&B" method.

I hope this article will give hope to voice students everywhere. You CAN sing like your favorite artists. You can have an "edge" without the threat of loosing your singing voice forever. You just need a voice teacher who specializes in the music you want to sing! Realize that there is technology out there which applies to you and your personal style which will not limit you as an artist!
