Golf Club Selection - 3 Golf Club Selection Tips To Help You Improve Your Golf Game By 5 Strokes

Golf club selection and being aware of which golf club to use in different situations is the key to lowering your golf score quickly...

The golf club you need to master to make this happen for you are the driver, the wedge and the putter.

The best opportunity you have from cutting strokes off your golf game is by using the golf club mentioned above correctly.

Using these golf clubs correctly will improve your golf game by as much as 5 strokes per round. In this article I'm going to concentrate on wedges...

The first thing you should master is knowing which golf club wedge to hit in different situations. Once you've chosen the right golf club you have a much higher chance of pulling off the intended shot.

Hitting a wedge is not difficult, however, hitting one with from say, 30-50 yards away from the green with complete confidence is a skill you need to master.

If you play any amount of golf on a regular basises you know that you can face this situation two or three times in a round. So, hitting a good golf club wedge into the green and leaving you a short putt is essential for a low score.

So, knowing this, which wedge golf club do you use for 30-50 yard pitch shot... the pitch, the sand or the lob? and once the golf ball lands on the green how do you get the golf ball to do what you want it to do?

Let's look at three typical 30-50 yard situations and the type of wedge shots each requires.

1) Lob Wedge - situation #1

The pin is up front and theres very little green to work with. What you need to do here is hit a high flying shot, with little run on the golf ball. This shot can be mastered with some practice.

The recommended golf club to use here is the lob wedge. This will get the golf ball in the air quickly and because of the height generated with this golf club, it will produce very little run, perfect for our scenario. (If you find yourself in any any lie other than the fairway you may want to consider one of the other wedges)

Because the lob wedge has 58 to 60 degrees of loft, theres no need to do anything with the clubface other than to square the face of the golf club to the target and perform your swing. The only thing you need to be careful about is where you land the ball.

2) Sand Wedge - situation #2

The hole is in the middle of the green. This means you have some green to work with and the sand wedge is a good choice of golf club for this situation, even if your off the fairway and into the rough. The sand wedge gives you many more options in the type of shot you can play than either the lob or the pitching wedges.

The sand golf club wedge enables you to change the roll and the trajectory with very little golf instruction.

If you square the golf club to the target, this will produce less carry and more roll. If you close the golf club face slightly, this will produce more roll than loft, if you want more height just open the club face a little more.

Bear in mind that with an open golf clubface the shot tends to go right.

3) Pitching Wedge Situation #3

In this situation the pin is right at the back of the green, with plenty of room to roll the golf ball. In this situation a pitching wedge is the golf club of choice if your on the fairway or light rough. (use one of the other wedges if your in heavy rough). The only thing to remember here is that the golf ball will run lower, so don't swing as hard as you would do with another iron.

Learning the mechanics to these type of shots is easy. The key is choosing the right golf club at the right time and making small adjustments in your shot. This comes with time and experience.

You must practice these 3 shots as much as you can and master the techniques. This in turn will give you confidence and in turn will make the shots easier to make.

Believe it or not but the wedge golf club is as important as the driver and the putter when it comes to making low scores of the golf course. They may not give the same excitement of making a 40 foot birdie or driving a 350 yard golf ball down the fairway, but over the course of an 18 holes they'll save you as many as five strokes or more from your scores. And that result is bound to lower your golf handicap.
