Why We Think We Need To Remember Past Failures

If you ask almost anyone whether it's necessary or important to remember one's past failures I think you will get an unequivocal YES!

The reasons given for needing to remember such failures run the gamut from:

1. They help me to not make the same mistakes again.

2. They keep me alert and aware.

3. They are part of what makes me the person I am today.

4. They represent valuable learning experiences.

5. They protect me from having to re-experience the same mental, physical and emotional pain again.

6. They keep me feeling safe and secure.

7. They help to boost my self confidence.

And so on.

If you agreed to any one of those then I think you are in for a bit of a surprise.

Just for a moment recall one of your own past failures.

Allow yourself to "get right into" the experience for a moment and notice what it does to you emotionally, physically and/or mentally while you are there.

If you're with me so far I think you'll feel some or all of the following: Disappointment, sad, bad, foolish, inadequate, incompetent, useless, deficient, low self esteem, tired, heaviness, anxious, nervousness, vulnerable and so on.

Now is this what you would call a toxic experience?

Well if you're honest with yourself I think that the answer to that question is obvious. If you are not then you should probably just skip the rest of the article as it will not help you.

So if you recognize the toxic nature of this memory do you want to go on harboring it inside of you any longer?

If not simply ask it to be completely purged from your life once and for all, then notice how you feel.
