Top 7 Things Your Business Can Do to Survive a Hurricane

During the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season we saw many small businesses and large corporations in the regions that were devastated or destroyed go out of business. It is necessary for your business no matter what size to have a disaster preparedness plan and a continuation plan so that such a large catastrophic hurricane will not impact your business. Sure, such large mother nature events of this size will impact your business somewhat but there are things you can do in your business so your business can survive a hurricane just like you and your family did.

Having a plan in advance that your employees know is by far the best thing to do. You should tell your employees if they choose to evacuate to give you phone numbers of where they will be staying, perhaps at a family members house in the next state.

You should make sure that anything that could be become airborne during a hurricane be removed from your business property. You should see that all of your company vehicles are moved to a nearby state along with evacuees who are employees. These vehicles should be sent with employees who are single and not married without other obligations. And they know as soon as it is humanly possible to get back through the roads to bring back those vehicles.

It is also important to have one of your main secretaries take three or four company cell phones and the phone numbers to those cell phones should be given employees days prior and before the evacuation to coordinate things. You need to consider all this in 2006 so your business can survive a hurricane.
