Hair loss at menopausal age
Question : I HAVE been experiencing hair-thinning the past few
months. Could this problem be caused by hormonal changes as I
have reached menopausal age?
Answer : Yes, hair-thinning is very much related to the hormonal
changes in the body, especially at menopause. Supplementing your
diet with evening primrose oil will help to regulate hormonal
balance and improve your thin and fine hair problems. Evening
primrose oil is also useful in the control of water permeability
of the skin.
There are other factors that may cause hair thinning and hair
loss such as stress, poor nutrition, medication and the
hereditary factor. Stress will also cause hair follicles to
shrink. Thus, stress management is just as important.
Antioxidant nutrients such as beta-carotene, vitamins C and E
and selenium are vital in promoting blood circulation to the
scalp. Zinc may help prevent hair loss and strengthen the roots
of the hair.
Avoid excessive perming, straightening, hair colouring and the
use of hot hair dryers. Also never brush your hair when it is
still wet as this action can weaken and break it. You may use
mild shampoo, rinse with cool water and gently towel dry.
