Thinking about getting a Piercing? You may want to read this first!

There are a few things that you want to take into consideration when getting a piercing (or any type of Body Modification really). You want to make sure that it's done by a person that knows what they're doing, at a place that has a good reputation, and with jewelry that is quality. Most people that get piercings done don't look into any of this. They go by the worst possible factor, cost. When you go to a doctor, do you go to a doctor that's having a sale? No! Why? Because when it comes to someone else doing anything to your body, you want quality work and care, not a price break. So why do people do this when getting pierced? No clue. Here are a couple tips for first-timers. First, go to a piercer that has years of studio experience, not ou-of-my-parents-basement experience. Paid experience is what you want. Go through the piercers portfolio and see what kind of work they have done. Is it all simple eyebrow, navel, and tongues? Or do they also perform some of the more complicated procedures If they've done lots of the more complicated piercings, and they've turned out well, then you know that you're looking at someone that knows what they're doing. Fo some examples of piercings and other Body Modification work, check out BodyMod.org (http://www.BodyMod.org). There's tons of photos for you to compare, and lots of people that will help you with any questions you may have. Next, make sure everything is sterilized by an autoclave. Spray / liquid sterilization is not good enough! If someone tries to sell you on that, leave. Everything should be in a bag, and they should open it in front of you so that you know you're getting clean materials. When they place the dots on you for guides, check them yourself before you get pierced. The piercer should ask you to do this anyway, but just in case. This way it's exactly where you want it. For some of my more complicated piercings, I've had my piercer redo the placement dots over 10 times. Don't' worry about it. Just remember, it's their job to put up with you, you're paying them, and it's your body! After you have the jewelry in, go home and snap a photo of it and upload it to BodyMod.org (http://www.BodyMod.org) so that the rest of the world can check it out and you'll wind up helping someone else that was in your shoes!
