Why People Don't Lose Weight
Most People will tell you that they would like to lose a few
pounds. Somehow they would also like to eat healthier. What
stops people from doing this great desire that they have on the
inside of them? We all know that if we cut back on our intake of
food, we will lose weight. This is so elementary but somehow we
still don't believe it will really happen. So we spend lots of
money on diets that promise to really show us how to do it! But
guess what? Every diet that you buy, or read about is going to
say the same thing...cut down your food intake and exercise!
These fancy diets might have a new plan of how to arrange your
intake of food, and it might be more appealing with new shakes
and bars to try, but the bottom line is, you will be eating
less, and doing something different than you are already doing
which has gotten you fat. Paul said in Galatians 5:17...For the
desires of the flesh are opposed to the Holy Spirit, and the
desires of the Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human
nature): for these are antagonistic to each other (continually
with standing and in conflict with each other), so that you are
not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do. In
essence, Paul was saying, if you are controlled by the flesh,
you will not follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
The flesh (being the desires of our bodies), is a very powerful
force. If one has addictions in the area of food, the only way
to be free of those addictions is to ask for God's help. Many
people start a new diet will great hope that they will stick to
the decision that they made to follow a diet plan. They may
stick to it for a week through sheer will power, but after that
the flesh comes through strong and says, "Okay, the weeks up,
where's my cookies!?."
The problem is, that most people are excessively hungry. The
problem is with the root of their appetite. We were all made to
passionately love. That passion has been put inside us by God
Himself. The World has done a good job of marketing everything
it can to appeal to this passion and desire in order to make
money. We've been programed to seek after food, other people,
and things. We spend our lives trying to impress people in order
to gain their approval and attention. This is a dead end road.
It will never bring satisfaction.
God created us to love passionately. He created us to love Him.
What we truly desire to feed, is that hunger inside of us to
find the object of our love and passion. The secret is, that
object is God. It is not a man or a woman, food, sex, success,
or more possessions. This is what has driven man to destruction
from the beginning of time. When we discover our true hunger,
and begin to seek after God will all of our passion and desire,
the desire for food becomes less of a stronghold. We must become
completely honest with ourselves and God and expose our passion
to Him, knowing He completely understands and satisfies all
those who thirst and hunger after Him.
Christians who still struggle with food issues (or other
addictions) have not sought after God in the most intimate way
they know how to. It would be impossible for their physical
hunger to be so distorted if they were seeking God enough to
satisfy their true hunger. I will also venture to say, that
those who do seek God in great measure, and still have
food/addiction issues have great passion and need to seek Him
even more. We can use our hunger for food that seems out of
control at times, as a barometer of how much more we need to
seek after God. God will fill us. In Psalm 81:10 He said to open
our mouths wide and He would fill it. Ask God to invade your
food. You'll will be able to follow any good, healthy eating
plan with His help. Things will become more clear, and you will
be on the road towards the real desires of your heart, which is
God's plan for your life.
