I'm Scared! I Can't Do That!
You ask anyone what they felt when they started their first
business and you're going to get about the same
responses....excited, nervous and the most popular, scared to
death. It's hard to look at another person who has a successful
home business and believe that, at one time, they were starting
out just like you are right now. Fortunately, they didn't give
in to that little voice that says things like, "You can't do
it", "You don't have what it takes", "People will laugh at you
if you fail..."
Several winters ago I took my two daughters skiing where hey had
their very first skiing lesson. My oldest daughter was able to
take two lessons in one day and made a lot of progress. She
wanted to go on the chair lift so bad I decided to take her.
Before I knew it we were sitting on the lift headed for the top.
All of a sudden I wondered what the heck I was doing? How would
I get her off this lift? What if the chair operator at the top
decided to take a break and wasn't there to slow the chair down
a little and maybe even help her off. To say the least, I was
freaked.
We get to the top and there was someone there who helped us out.
Then we started down the run. It was one of those experiences
you have as a mom, that makes you really happy you're a mom.
Here's my five year old daughter going down the ski slope with
me. Sure she fell a few times but each time she got up she'd
say, "Mom, I love this. This is so much fun. I don't want to go
home."
Needless to say, when we reached the bottom of the hill I was
the proudest mom there. It was an incredible experience. It was
even more incredible, I think, because of the fact that I was so
scared about taking her on the lift. I just didn't know how it
would turn out.
Starting a business is very similar. You just don't know what's
going to happen, but if you give in to that negative voice --
you'll never know how it will turn out, because you never took
that ride to the top. You'll never feel that joy of
accomplishment. And that's a feeling you don't want to miss out
on.
