The Drakensberg Mountains is one of the hidden tourist gems that South Africa has to offer. The scenery is spectacular, dramatic and inspiring. On a good day views of over 160km are possible with the crisp peaks easily identifiable. Locations for viewing bushman rock art to boot. 1. Hiking Hiking trails in the 'berg offer something for everyone. Stroll through the foothills, hike the upper reaches or take on a challenging peak. Hiking maps are available at the start of the trails from KZN Wildlife. You can also overnight in a cave, tent or hut. 2. Bushman Rock Art The best Bushman rock art can be viewed at Kamberg. There is an excellent video presentation before the 3 hour guided tour. The rock art at Giants Castle at the main caves is also good and is an easy walk. The Didima Rock Art Centre at Cathedral Peak offers a great presentation although the paintings are reproductions. All rock art must be viewed with a guide 3. Horse riding Horse riding through the foothills of the Drakensberg is an experience not to be missed. Sengani offers safe trails for beginners and experienced alike. Spionkop game reserve even offers game viewing on horse back 4. Battlefields Steeped in history, the Battlefields Region offers enthralling tales of British, Boer, Zulu and Voortrekker history. The Anglo Boer War reached as far south as Mooi River and the many sites are best visited with a specialist guide 5.
