Book printing in the digital age
Book printing is one of your most important expenses that any
publisher is ever going to make in his or her career. It is
common knowledge that not all of these publishers have enough
resources to cater to their printing needs. And of course, they
do not want to lessen the impact of their books just because of
the printing process used.
Digital printing is the technology now. Digital printing makes
sense for small publishers. Most industry experts do not see
this trend coming from large publishers. They are seen most
prominently with small and self publishers who can afford to
print and market their books on their own.
With the way things are going, it seems that more digital book
printing services will be available in the future. This will
give the self publisher even more choices. It will eventually
drive the cost down too. Short run digital technology for black
and white digital book printing has been around for a while now.
The original "docutech" technology was designed for one purpose
and that is to produce short run black and white books
economically.
On the other hand, while there have been digital color presses
on the market for some time now, their original intent was more
of a commercial nature like ad sheets, postcards, etc. But not
for digital book printers.
The full color digital printing presses have come to the point
that full and four color printing is now possible. Digital book
covers have been printed successfully for quite some time too.
Another advantage to digital printing is that you can use it for
very short print runs. For example, if you want professional
looking galleys to send to reviewers, you can print them
digitally quickly and easily. Even if the entire book is not
printed digitally, your galleys will look better and more
professional if you print them this way.
It can be noted, however, that there is no real quantity
discount when it comes to digital printing presses. Your unit
cost stays more or less the same no matter what quantity you
print. This will be great if you want a small number of copies.
But if you want to make several thousand copies, It would not
appear that great.
Besides, digital printing is generally more expensive than
offset in quantities over 400. That is why many are opting to
have their own digital printers at home to cater to these small
needs.
