Why Working Mums (and Dads) sometimes have to be Selfish

Deadlines. Pressure. A teenage daughter. And a Golden Labrador. Just now, I need to spend a lot of lot of time writing. Another manual for one of my "Subtle Energy" courses is gradually taking shape. So what's the problem? I got up early this morning, got started and before I knew it, got stuck... I was writing about improving visualisation skills and creating a powerful 'vision'. Something I have been teaching for years - so, why was it so difficult to write it all down in a harmonious, flowing and practical way? Getting In the Flow There were so many other things to do. My daughter is on a half-term break from school, the garden has way too many leafshedding trees at this time of year and as if I didn't already have enough to do, the dog was staring me out and nodding her head toward the door and her lead (well, that's how it seemed to me). I gave in - it wasn't flowing too well anyway and a brisk walk through the brightly coloured woods would do me good. I know that - it always does. Get Back The Energy You see, the one mistake we make when we're busy, is that we forget to do something that gives us back our energy, that reminds us of the amazing journey we are on and the beauty of just being alive. We think that by working harder, faster, longer we will get more done and before we know it another day without a true sense of being and living has passed us by. Stepping out, even for 15 minutes, doing something that you love; walking, cycling, or just sitting in silence is what really allows you to get more done. These moments re-connect you with who you really are, they give you strength and optimism and re-align you with your vision. Your Vision Being creative is not only about being artistic. You tap into creative energy in your normal working day many times. You need it when planning to cook a special dinner for friends, re-arranging and decorating a room, planning a day out with the kids. And taking some time out for yourself, to tune in to your needs and revive your vision will give you the boost you need to create something special from an ordinary day. Creating Something Special I came home from my walk with just the right words for my '7 action steps for creating your most powerful vision' - and - with the desire to share this experience with you. So, go for a walk, enjoy what you see by the wayside, even if there is only one tree, a small shrub and a single flower smiling modestly up at you. Feel the air, the movement of your body and enjoy the Bliss of the Journey. Look after Yourself First Have you ever been on a flight where they tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before you help anyone else? There's a good reason for that. If you don't look after yourself first, you won't be any use to anyone else. So have a great day today - with some quality time to walk and create. Working mums (and dads) can be creative and stay popular with the teenage daughters and Golden Labradors too. You just need to remember - first, put on YOUR oxygen mask.
