Does Controversy Equal Link Baiting? Good SEO?

Have you heard of link baiting? Is controversy a good form of link baiting? Perhaps. When I realized how upset everyone was over Superbowl XL I had to do a little link baiting of my own. I registered www.steelers12thman.com and started telling everyone how football is fixed and how I have proof. Of course I don't believe this is true, and I don't have proof. What I do have is some very funny pictures and controversy. So I posted up at a few blogs, told them about my 'proof'. Shared my site with friends and family, myspace, etc. and asked everyone to post around for me. Some thought it was dumb, some thought it was funny, and some thought it was very controversial... but the truth of the matter is, it doesn't matter. What did matter, is that many of them took the time to post up a link for me. Those backlinks to my 12th man site are helping it to build rank and it will soon be a highly visited site. (getting there already on foot traffic alone). I've done the same with other sites, like my dalmatians and my ,carcasherdotcom seocontest site. Don't cause people harm, don't insult people, but controversy with a fun twist is fine, and will help you to establish more links! Those links will help you two fold. A. People will see and follow those links. Thats Good traffic. B. Anchor text links will help you to establish ranks in the Search Engines... which will result in good traffic. And THAT is what good SEO is all about.
