Improving Deer Quality in Northeastern Pa
The following is a typical question asked of our nursery about
the types and trees that we raise. "I am interested in
establishing some fruit and nut trees on my farm in rural
northeastern Pa. for the deer population. I am involved with a
Quality Deer Management Association and I am trying to provide a
Natural deer environment here on the farm. Do you have any
suggestions and do you ship your trees UPS or can they only be
picked up at your location. I really want to stay with trees
that are grown in Pa. Thank you for your time.." Most of our
customers try to avoid deer damage. Usually the question is what
is a plant that they won't eat? It is ironic that for quality
deer management the best plants may also include plants that
deer do not eat. This is because for quality deer management you
really need habitat improvement. The whole ecosystem is
important in improving quality and number of deer. Plants that
deer do not eat may improve the cover. This means better
survival for winter winds and snow. With better cover deer don't
need to eat as much because protection from elements is related
to enegry needed to sustain the deer population. So when you
consider feeding deer or plants that are known sources of fruit
and nuts for deer, also ask about habitat improvement. You will
get more bang for your bucks. For more information on plants and
