Easy-To-Make Custom Rugs
Sisal rugs have long been known for their versatility and
durability. But they also offer an inexpensive way to customize
the look of a room. By simply painting a stenciled border around
the edge, you can turn an ordinary rug into a unique floor
accent.
Start by choosing the size and style of sisal rug that
compliments your room. Rugs made from coarse fibers work better
for painted stencils since the paint adheres nicely to the
porous surface. You will also want to purchase a stencil brush,
paints (acrylic or latex), painters tape, stencils (unless you
want to make your own), and a clear acrylic aerosol sealer.
Before you start, unroll the rug and let it sit for at least 24
hours to relax the fibers. When you are ready to begin, plan out
the placement of the entire design before you start painting. Be
careful not to paint over too much of the rug! A 3 inch to 5
inch border works best.
Once you have figured out the placement of the design, tape the
stencils to the rug. Use the stencil brush to apply the paint,
making sure to work the paint into the fibers. Let the paint
completely dry and then apply the clear acrylic sealer over the
painted border. Allow the sealer to thoroughly dry before using
the rug.
Congratulations! You've just created your own customized rug!
