Many manufacturers use the Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology to improve colour screens they provide to consumers.
In a TFT screen an extra matrix of transistors are connected to a LCD panel. These transistors drive the pixels removing ghosting and slow response speed that has affect previous pc monitor displays of days gone by.
The liquid crystal elements of each pixel are arranged so that in their normal state (with no voltage applied) the light coming through the passive filter is polarized so as to pass through the screen. When a voltage is applied the liquid crystal elements twist up to ninety degrees in reference to the voltage, changing their polarization and blocking the light's path.
