Golf - Buying The Right Clubs

One of the biggest areas that most new golfers have problems with is buying the right set of golf clubs. Too many times someone will just go to a mass retailer like Wal-Mart and simply pick a set of golf clubs off the shelf. Buying the right set of golf clubs for you and your game, is the single most important thing you can ever do for your golf game. It will affect your golf game more than any other decision you will make.

Consider that whatever type of golf clubs you purchase now, you'll be using them for many years to come. Golf clubs are really an investment and an expensive one at that. So it only makes sense to approach it like that and make the best investment decision you can. What should you look for and not look for, before purchasing any set of golf clubs?

Mass Marketed Clubs

This is the easiest way to purchase golf clubs, but it is also the one of the worst. Think about it for a moment. Mass marketed golf clubs are made for the average golfer. Are you average? Are you of average height, weight, etc.? In addition, most every mass retailer will carry only 3-4 different brands of golf clubs. The selection is extremely limited. If you're a left-handed golfer the choices are even fewer, if they even carry left-handed golf clubs at all.

Get Fitted Professionally

I would highly recommend that you go to a golf retail store, or your local golf club professional and be custom fit. When you have your golf clubs custom fit for you rather than buying a set of mass marketed golf clubs you are helping your golf game tremendously. These golf clubs will be designed for your height, your swing and your style of play. In most all cases, it doesn't cost anything extra to be custom fit.

Take your time with this. Look around at all the different manufacturers of golf clubs. Try swinging various clubs until you find the set that feels comfortable to you. Most every large golf retail store has an indoor hitting facility. And the local golf pro shop will let you go out on the driving range to hit a few golf balls with any clubs.

Find the right golf club for you. Does the grip feel right? If not, have them changed. Is the club too heavy? Look for something lighter. Is the shaft too loose for your swing? Look for golf clubs with a steel shaft for better control. It is all of these little things that make choosing the right set of golf clubs so important. Everyone is different and what works for one may not work for another.

Buying a good set of custom fitted golf clubs should be taken seriously. It is a significant investment and one that will have a great impact on your golf game. Take your time with choosing your new golf clubs. The ultimate goal in purchasing new clubs is to better enjoy your golf game. And you will have much more fun out on the golf course with your new clubs by choosing the set that is right for you.
