With all the different sports available to us and with all the many years of sports memories behind us, it would be impossible to pick out a list of the greatest moments in sports history. But certainly the moments listed here have to rank up there with some of the beSt. You can make your own decision.

Probably one of the most emotional, if not greatest moments in sports history was on July 4, 1949, when Lou Gehrig said good-bye to the world of baseball. Not too long before this date, Gehrig had been diagnosed with a terrible disease that would later bear his name. In his speech he uttered the famous line, "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man in the world". There wasn't a dry eye in the stadium on that day and Gehrig's string of playing in 2,130 games had come to an end.

Moving to the world of golf, a gentleman by the name of Tiger Woods became the youngest Masters champ of all time. The date was April 13, 1997. But Woods didn't just win the Masters. He absolutely dominated it with a 4 round score of 18 under par. He was a full 12 strokes ahead of the closest person to him. Woods was only 21 years old at the time. Millions of people all over the world watched this historical event as it happened.

If you're a football fan, there was probably no greater moment than on January 12, 1969. On this day Joe Namath, one of the most flashy quarterbacks in the history of the game, led his underdog Jets to an unbelievable victory over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, a team that had the best defense in football. The Colts had only lost one game all year, but that didn't stop Namath and the Jets who went on to win by a score of 16-7 even though they were 18 point underdogs.

For those of you who are into the Olympics, there have been many great Olympic moments. Probably one of the greatest was on October 18, 1968, when a guy by the name of Bob Beamon broke the long jump world record. The 24 year old from New York broke the record by a whole two feet, which was absolutely amazing. The old record was 27 feet and 4 3/4 inches. Beamon jumped an astounding 29 feet and 2 1/2 inches.

But probably the greatest sports moment of all time was on February 22, 2003. On this date, the impossible happened. It was the Winter Olympics and it was ice hockey. The Soviet Union had always dominated this sport and this year they were an absolute powerhouse. In the meantime, the United States had put together a bunch of teenage amateurs. These guys weren't even supposed to make it to the medal round, let alone do what they did. They defeated the Soviet Union, even before the finals and then went on to beat Finland to take the gold medal. But it was their defeat of the unbeatable Soviet Union on this date that shocked the sports world and makes this the hands down greatest moment in sports history.
