Sibling Rivalry "The Ongoing Saga of Two Brothers ~ Part One:
The Shed"
Many secrets have been revealed about my husband, Steve and his
younger brother, Gabe that would make one wonder how they
survived long enough to celebrate their 21st birthdays. Let me
just add here that I am so thankful I have 3 girls and only one
boy.
It has been told for years that these two brothers would race
each other around the block on their prided motorcycles. The
winner would be determined by who could get to a certain finish
line in the back yard first. Then, they would park the beloved
motorcycles in a small shed in the back yard and head to the
house for dinner. I think the competition just got to Gabe one
afternoon (you know how younger brothers are) and he lost all
sense of reality. One way or another he would be the winner.
It was Easter and the family had gone on a picnic. After
returning home their dad unloaded the motorcycles and told the
boys to put them in the shed. Gabe's actions are still a
favorite family topic to this day. He decided to start a race
and carry it a bit further with a maneuver that would go down in
infamy. It was to outdo anything Steve had ever done in the
past. In this way he would be known as the Grand PooBah of
motorcycle racing in Steele family history.
Unaware that there was a race taking place, Steve was cruising
calmly back to the shed on his motorcycle. Soon Gabe roared
passed Steve, making a full loop around the yard. He then headed
full throttle toward the shed, kicking up dirt and grass. Steve
stopped and watched in amazement as his brother flew across the
yard. This is where it really gets interesting, you see the shed
doors were open, but only open a foot.
Gabe, being the Evil-Knevil he was, had decided he could
gracefully twist his handle bars through the shed door and glide
right on through. "This will be the best stunt ever, I will show
my 'Super Sibling Stevie' what a Real stunt is," he thought. Not
being a physics major at 7 he had not figured out that this
configuration simply would not work. At this point, I am sure
you see where this is headed. As he roared through the shed door
the handlebars caught the edge and the doors collapsed on top of
him with the sound of a terrible crash.
Steve stood frozen to the ground he stood on. He thought Gabe
had killed himself! In the next split second Steve threw his
bike to the ground and raced full speed to his brother. He
pulled the doors off, and there was Gabe, still in the rider
position, the only difference; he was horizontal rather than
vertical with a wide grin plastered to his face. There was not a
wound to be found on his 7-year-old skin. However, Steve was
ready to inflict a few after the lecture they received from
their dad.
As the years have passed and the boys and their father have
went their different ways they still stay in touch and have
found an awesome way to send pictures and share stories to each
other Through Cards.
