SEA IT TO BELIZE IT!
If you're looking for total sea adventure, then you've come to
the right place. Belize is it when it comes to water adventure
sports. With the largest barrier reef in the Northern
Hemisphere, offshore atolls, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons,
and hundreds of sand cayes, there are a host of exciting
activities waiting for you once you get there.
For those who have no experience diving, there's snorkeling.
Except for very young children, there is no age limit. All you
need is a snorkel, a mask, and flippers (which you either
purchase at home or rent right here in Belize), and you're all
set. You can jump in the water right away with an instructor and
witness the most astounding underwater plant and animal life in
the Caribbean. For the advanced, diving is the way to go. Frolic
with a school of dolphins, be awed by the hundreds of species of
coral, and even explore a sunken shipwreck. The best snorkeling
and diving sites include Ambergris Caye, Turneffe Islands,
Lighthouse Reef, and Glover's Reef.
Now if you would rather cast into the saltwater than be in it,
then you better go fish. Literally. All kinds of fishing--spin,
fly, trolling--can be experienced year-round. Blue crystal-clear
waters teem with game fish such as bonefish, permit, and tarpon,
which have grown accustomed to a rich diet of shrimp and crabs.
Within a few minutes of leaving the dock, you will find yourself
casting away in either the cool, shallow waters of the tidal
flats or navigating the atolls hundreds of feet deep in a boat.
Oh, and did we mention you could go kayaking, sailing,
windsurfing, jetskiing? Resorts offer both half-day trips and
whole day excursions. And for those who want to relax and just
soak up the rays, there's always relaxing on the deck of a
glass-bottom boat or a raft.
